It’s that time of year again! It’s getting hotter, the decorations are going up and the countdown to your first day of annual leave has well and truly begun.
As the New Year looms, we reflect on the year that was and focus our attention on the year to come. Often the last-minute push of festive season pressure can overshadow the year’s achievements, adding an assortment of emotions and stress to your already overflowing workload.
Here at TMS we recognise the importance of strengthening and supporting team values as we enter into the final days of 2018. As you begin to wrap up projects and establish goals for 2019, we encourage teams to reinforce their company values with the intention of recharging, motivating and focusing the team for a great start to the new year.
We understand and appreciate that this time of year is busy and you may not have a spare few hours (let alone a day) to put aside for a values workshop. With some simple, fun and festive additions to your daily work practices however, you can close off the year and embed your team values in a flexible, festive setting.
Deck the workplace with bells of holly
At TMS one of our core values is Fun. We embrace the colour and joy in our daily practices, building on a positive team culture and boosting employee morale.
A great activity to bring the team together while celebrating the holidays is incorporating decorations into the workplace. Why not arrange an office/department/desk decoration competition? Whether it be putting up a communal Christmas tree or hanging a wreath on the outside of your office door, get the team together and discuss holiday plans over tinsel and hanging lights.
Tis the season of gift giving
Secret Santa is a must in our office and a great way to get the team involved. Set a price limit and encourage the team to get creative with their gift ideas. If you have a team of foodies, why not organise a morning tea bake off or a bring-and-share-meal day to show off your cooking (or buying) skills! During the morning tea, challenge the team to share their top three achievements for the year and top three goals for the year ahead. Keep it positive and reinforce your team’s values throughout the discussion.
This time of year can be challenging for many so why not switch it up and arrange an office charity donation? An Orange Sky Australia donation (https://orangesky.org.au/donate/) goes towards creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are often ignored or disconnected from the community. We love the idea of giving back, particularly this time of year!

For those of us in the Southern hemisphere, you may have a preference for festive accessories over winterwear. We recommend Santa hats, festive tees, holiday earrings…. we hear Christmas rashies are a thing now too!
December is a great time of year to strengthen both personal and professional relationships within and outside your team. Whether it be organising one of the above activities or simply making the conscious effort to link and communicate with your colleagues, we recommend staying connected this December!
