On October 10, 2018, TMS will be launching our latest research manual: RM5. For our TMS Network Members, RM5 will provide you with up-to-date research data and give you the ongoing confidence that our tools are tested for reliability and validity.
Before I joined the TMS Team in April of this year, I too was an accredited Network Member. I commenced my TMS journey in 2009 and had the pleasure of completing my TMP accreditation in Perth with my now colleague, Clio Robertson.
Upon completion of my accreditation I felt confident to facilitate the TMS program, however, there was one question I always hoped I would never be asked. The big ‘R’ question; ‘Can you explain the TMS Research in detail?’. I can honestly say that this question has never come up for me even though I have completed hundreds of TMP debriefs and workshops.
One of my facilitation tips is to share that TMS is extensively researched and reviewed by the British Psychological Society early in your programme. This promotes confidence in the Profile and pre-empts the burning question on the minds of learners in the room. Moreover, once learners read their Profile the face validity typically speaks for itself.
A few more tips for Network Members in relation to the big ‘R’ question.
Use interesting statistics – You may like to consider including relevant interesting statistics from RM5 in your programmes. This can help connect your learners to their industry norm data and have some fun along the way! Here are a couple of my favourite stats to get you thinking.
- CEO/Managing Directors – 14% major role preference Explorer Promotor
- Environmental Engineers – 0% major role preference Upholder Maintainer
- IT Management Specialists – 28% major role Thruster Organisers

Update your TMS research knowledge – I am sure you all want to read over 1000 pages of TMS Research! No? The good news is we have short executive summary documents available for each TMS instrument. These can be found on the Network Members Intranet and are easy to share with your research-curious learners.
